Dear Parents/Guardians,

We do hope you are all well and keeping safe.

As parents, you are vital partners in the work we do. We hope we can continue to work together this academic year and during this unprecedented time to build the already established, firm relationship between home and school.  We truly believe ‘Together we can make a Difference’.

The pupils have been remarkable in their approach to learning at home and we are hearing, from staff, of the fantastic work completed.

We will continue to update the website to keep you all involved and staff will make contact through texts and telephone calls.

March sees the beginning of Lent, a time in the Church calendar when we take time out to reflect and prepare for Easter. In school we will be doing this through various litugies and opportunities to pray together during the coming weeks.

Much research has been carried out around the long-term benefits of reading and reading for pleasure in particular.  These benefits can include mental stimulation; improved well-being and reduced anxiety; greater knowledge; improved memory retention; an increased bank of vocabulary and better articulation; greater focus and concentration as well as improved thinking skills.  St Bede’s has been trialling a programme called Reading Plus with our Year 6 children with some amazing results in terms of increased fluency and comprehension.  We will be extending this programme to all of Key Stage 2 in the Summer Term.  It can be accessed at home and includes a broad collection of both fiction and non-fiction engaging short texts.  It gives staff an insight to the reading genres that are popular with our children.  Because texts are short, children are more likely to try out genres that they would not normally choose, thereby broadening their reading experiences.

Nicholas Postgate Trust have elected for schools to be part of the Reciprocal Reading Programme.  This is a project funded by Opportunity North East and delivered through a partnership between Legacy Learning Trust, Queen’s University Belfast and FFT Literacy.  This is is a Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 Transition project and therefore it will be our Year 6 children who will be taking part.  It is an interactive teaching technique that is suitable for all readers.

This weekend we heard how Jesus, as a baby, was presented to God in the Temple in Jerusalem. This presentation finds its complete and perfect fulfilment in the mystery of the passion, death and Resurrection of the Lord. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a combined feast, commemorating the Jewish practice of the purification of the mother after childbirth and the presentation of the child to God in the Temple and his buying back (redemption) from God. It is also known as the Feast of the Purification of Mary, and the Feast of Candlemas. It is also called the Feast of Encounter (Hypapánte in Greek) because the New Testament, represented by the baby Jesus, encountered the Old Testament, represented by Simeon and Anna. Joseph offered two pigeons in the Temple as sacrifice for the purification of Mary after her childbirth and for the presentation and redemption ceremonies performed for baby Jesus.

We were overwhelmed with your kindness and lovely wishes. We hope that you had a beautiful holy Christmas with your loved ones and wish you all the best for this New Year.

With the continued support from the talented and dedicated team here at St Bede’s, we are wholeheartedly committed to being successful, and continuing to grow and develop wherever we can in 2020. The children are central to everything we strive for and their safety, happiness and of course education is paramount and our priority.

Christmas is coming! There are loved ones to see, gifts to give, baking to share. We prepare our homes for the celebration. Yet even more important than this outward preparation is the preparation of our heart.
