Design and Technology at St Bede’s…

‘Technology makes possibilities.  Design makes solutions.’ – John Maeda

At St Bede’s we believe our Design and Technology curriculum is inspiring, rigorous and practical. We use creativity and imagination so pupils can design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.  Through our curriculum our pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. They learn how to take risks and become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook

Our Design and Technology curriculum provides children with a particular set of disciplines as well as core knowledge.  We call this ‘Working as a Designer.’ The disciplines and skills are built on progressively each year.

Design and Technology disciplines include:

  • Food and nutrition
  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Understanding materials and textiles

Core Knowledge includes:

  • Design – The art or process of deciding how something will look or work.
  • Make – Creating something by combining materials or putting parts together.
  • Evaluate – Forming an opinion of the value or quality of something after careful thought.
  • Apply – Using something or making something work in a particular situation.
